Eora/Sydney artist Milan Ring has returned with her latest slice of enigmatic R&B in the form of ‘Mangos’. Through the track and its accompanying video, she reminds the listener that the sun is never out of reach. It’s a playful, emotive track that sets up a weightless, bright sound from the outset, with warm textures (in part created by a Guzheng, a type of Chinese harp) counteracting a memorable pitch-shifted vocal hook. The track “started from an instrumental, drumless sample that 18YOMAN and I had created together. Then, when I was away on a little solo summer retreat in Australia, I produced the beat, added in the Guzheng, the guitars and the rest of the song unfolded very quickly.” Head back to 2021 and check out Milan Ring’s excellent debut album, I’m Feeling Hopeful. -Dan Peeke
